Bone Broth Recipe for Dogs with Turmeric

Bone broth has been known for its myriad of health benefits for both humans and dogs alike. It is a nutritious, easily digestible, and delicious addition to your pet’s diet that can help support their joints, skin, and overall well-being. In this blog post, we will explore a scrumptious bone broth recipe with the added benefits of turmeric for your furry friend.

Benefits of Bone Broth for Dogs

Bone broth is a great source of essential minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which support your dog’s bone health. It also contains collagen, which can help maintain joint health, and glycine, an amino acid that supports liver function and detoxification. Moreover, bone broth is a fantastic way to keep your dog hydrated, especially during hot summer months or when they are feeling under the weather.

Why Add Turmeric to Bone Broth?

Turmeric, a vibrant yellow-orange spice, has been used for centuries in traditional medicine due to its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric, has been shown to help alleviate joint pain and inflammation in dogs. By adding turmeric to the bone broth, you’ll be providing your dog with an extra boost of health benefits.

  • 2-3 pounds of raw bones (beef, chicken, or turkey)
  • 4 cups of water (or enough to cover the bones)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Optional: vegetables such as carrots, celery, or kale

  1. Preparing the bones: If using beef or turkey bones, roast them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes to enhance the flavor. Chicken bones do not need to be roasted.
  2. In a large pot or slow cooker, place the bones and add water until the bones are fully submerged. Add the apple cider vinegar, which helps to extract the minerals from the bones.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 12-24 hours for chicken bones or 24-48 hours for beef or turkey bones. The longer you cook the broth, the more nutrients will be extracted from the bones.
  4. About an hour before the broth is finished, add the turmeric powder and any optional vegetables you’d like to include.
  5. Once the broth has finished cooking, let it cool down. Strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer, discarding the solids. Store the bone broth in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze it in ice cube trays for easy portioning.

How to Serve Bone Broth to Your Dog

You can serve bone broth to your dog in several ways, such as:

  1. As a treat: Pour the chilled bone broth into ice cube trays and freeze them. Offer your dog these “broth cubes” as a tasty and refreshing treat, especially on hot days.
  2. Mixed with their regular food: Pour a small amount of warmed bone broth over your dog’s food to add moisture and flavor.
  3. As a meal topper: Drizzle a few tablespoons of warmed bone broth on top of your dog’s regular meal to add extra nutrients and flavor.
